Resource Monitoring

The Water Resources Authority (WRA) routinely monitors streamflow at 133 river gauging stations and groundwater levels at 320 well sites throughout Jamaica. Records are also kept of water abstractions. River Guages The WRA river gauge network consists of 133 stations that record the daily flow with the river at a particular point. These guages consist of 100 fully automatic and 33 manual gauges. Automatic gauges are housed in pipe wells and stilling wells across the island. The information obtained is critical to planning for the development of bridges and water supply schemes. Well Monitoring Presently, there are no fully automatic guages that measure water levels in wells. Instead, wells are measured monthly by WRA technicians. Three types of wells are included in our monthly measurement programme: 1. Pumping wells 2. Non-pumping wells 3. Small diameter coreholes
